METROS IN BRITAIN:

Der zweite Band der Reihe über U-Bahnen in Europa führt uns nach Großbritannien. Hier haben wir den Begriff ‚Metro‘ sehr weit gefasst und alle in England und Schottland derzeit vorhandenen städtischen Schienenverkehrsmittel mit aufgenommen. Nach den klassischen U-Bahnen in London und Glasgow, die bereits mehr als 100 Jahre in Betrieb sind, entstanden in den neunziger Jahren mehrere moderne Stadtbahnnetze, die in vielen Fällen bestehende Bahntrassen nutzten und somit günstiger zu bauen waren.

Derzeit sind in Großbritannien im Bereich des städtischen Schienennahverkehrs lediglich die Verlängerung der Docklands Light Railway von King George V bis Woolwich Arsenal und der Abzweig der Piccadilly Line zum Terminal 5 am Flughafen Heathrow in Bau.

In Großbritannien wird der Begriff ‚Metro‘ inzwischen für alle möglichen Arten von Bahnen verwendet, angefangen von der Stadtbahn in Birmingham bis hin zu den s-bahn-artigen Vorortbahnen in London. This second volume of the ‘Metros in Europe’ series takes us to Britain, where we have used the term ‘metro’ in a very wide sense. The book includes all urban railway networks, from the well-known London Underground to the Blackpool Tramway. With the classical underground systems of London and Glasgow being more than 100 years old, there was a true renaissance of light rail during the 1990s with many modern systems being built. Many of these made use of abandoned railway routes, thus reducing the cost of their construction.

At present, the only urban rail projects in Britain under construction are the Docklands Light Railway extension from King George V to Woolwich Arsenal, and the Piccadilly Line extension to Heathrow Terminal 5.

In Britain we can see clearly, that the term ‘Metro’ can be used for any kind of urban railway, from the tramway-like system of Birmingham to high-frequency suburban railways of the London overground network. We would like to take you for a ride on every urban railway in the U.K., from south to north, and provide you with the basic details and a large number of photographs.
