Metros und Frankreich – eine Kombination, die natürlich zu allererst Assoziationen zu Paris erweckt. Und dies nicht zu Unrecht, ist doch die über 100 Jahre alte Pariser Metro mit ihren 16 Linien eine der vielseitigsten U-Bahnen der Welt, sie ist außerdem zweifellos ein untrennbarer Bestandteil des städtischen Lebens und der Alltagskultur einer Weltstadt. Doch daneben gibt es in Frankreich inzwischen eine ganze Reihe weiterer, vielfach unkonventioneller Metrosysteme, die seit den siebziger Jahren völlig neu aufgebaut wurden: von den gummibereiften Großprofil-Metros in Marseille und Lyon über die vollautomatischen, fahrerlosen VAL-Minimetros in Lille, Toulouse, Rennes sowie am Pariser Flughafen Orly, bis hin zu Metro-ähnlichen Verkehrssystemen wie der teilweise unterirdischen Stadtbahn in Rouen, der automatischen Kabinenbahn Poma in Laon und der streckenweise als Express-U-Bahn charakterisierbaren RER-S-Bahn in Paris, deren Linie A mit etwa einer Million Fahrgästen pro Tag zu den am meisten benutzten Schnellbahnstrecken der Welt gehört. And in fact, the Paris Metro is more than 100 years old and comprises a total of 16 lines - for one of Europe‘s largest metropolises this fascinating underground system is an inseparable part of everyday city life. But besides Paris, France has a variety of other, often unconventional, rapid transit systems, which have been developed since the 1970s: among them are the rubber-tyred metros of Marseille and Lyon, the fully automatic, driverless VAL systems in Lille, Toulouse, Rennes and at Orly Airport in Paris, as well as the partly underground light rail system in Rouen, the automatic people-mover in Laon and the RER network in Paris. With more than a million passengers per day, RER Line A is amongst the busiest rapid transit lines in the world. This book, the third volume of the series ‚Metros in Europe‘, illustrates the history of all these systems.
